Spire expands financial assistance for customers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic
ST. LOUIS (July 13, 2020) — Spire is expanding financial assistance for limited-income customers who are impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and struggling to pay their natural gas bills.
Starting Saturday, July 18, customers with household incomes up to 185 percent of the federal poverty level are eligible for the new assistance. Those customers with household incomes from 0-135% were previously able to access assistance through other government programs, such as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP. However, that funding expired May 31, leaving many with few options.
Working with the Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC), Spire recommended an expansion of the existing program to help more of its customers. The program received approval on July 8 and is now accepting applications.
Spire will award funds through September 30, or until the funds are exhausted.
“From the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, Spire has been committed to ensuring our community maintains access to safe, reliable natural gas,” says Scott Carter, senior vice president, chief operating officer of distribution operations and president, Spire Missouri. “With so many people struggling to make ends meet, we continue to create new ways to help our customers.”
This is Spire’s latest initiative to help limited-income customers who’ve been impacted by the pandemic with their natural gas bills. Previously, Spire committed $500,000 in matching gifts through their DollarHelp program in Missouri.
